Editorial coverage

Netherlands - Benelux

NautaDutilh remains one of the Netherlands' highly respected law firms and its IP department, led by Charles Gielen, also received high praise from peers. Another member of the team, John Allen, was also recommended. On the patent litigation side, the team focuses on biotechnology, medical devices and telecommunications. Allen is representing the licensing company High Point in an important patent infringement litigation case against KPN, the mobile network operator. The case concerns High Point's patent to a UMTS network architecture. Allen and Marlous Schrijvers advised Holland's largest cable and internet provider, Ziggo, in a file sharing case brought by Brein.

Belgium - Benelux

NautaDutilh moves up in the patent table following recommendations from competitors. Partner Liesbeth Weynants recently advised Document Security Systems (DSS) against the European Central Bank (ECB), which moved to revoke DSS's patent on a secure method of scanning documents in a number of European countries. DSS responded by filing infringement claims against the ECB and although the case was lost in Belgium the stakes remain high: if DSS prevails euro banknotes may be found to infringe its patent. The firm is traditionally strong in trade marks, where the key figures are Philippe Péters and counsel Tanguy de Haan. De Haan recently advised Sports Media against Formula One Licensing (owner of F1 trade marks) which launched a claim against Global Sports Media's F1 Live trade mark. Partners Florence Verhoestraete and Péters in 2010 handled some large copyright cases, most notably for Nintendo relating to a new console. "They provide excellent service with well-detailed opinions that also make business sense" says a trade mark client. "[Péters and de Haan] have a deep knowledge of our business and can advise accordingly," says another.
