Garrigues is Spain's biggest corporate law firm and has over the years begun to develop a strong IP practice. The firm holds its position across the board under head of IP Joao Miranda de Sousa. In highlight matters, a team led by partner Carolina Pina successfully defended YouTube in a copyright infringement case brought against it by Spanish TV channel Telecinco involving an alleged violation of IP rights. The claim was successfully thrown out by the Madrid commercial court in 2010. Pina has also been advising Sol Melia on the defence of it TRYP trade mark.
In early 2011 de Sousa was busy defending Italian company Generale Conserve (GECO) against a trade mark infringement claim for the mark As Do Mar. The case has reached the Court of Justice of the EU. De Sousa has also been instructed as an adviser to the Marca Única project with regards to IP regulations and global IP compliance issues.
