United States

Recognising an increase in ITC proceedings in recent years, Sidley Austin bolstered its capabilities there with the addition of former Fish & Richardson patent star Brian Nester to its Washington, DC office. The firm's debut in the ITC rankings is a response to market commentators recognising its representations in this forum, which include handling patent disputes for Microsoft and RIM.

Sidley's patent attorneys were recommended for their "incredible intellectual competence, impressive knowledge of the law and underlying technology, trustworthiness, tenacity and phenomenal trial skills," in the words of one client. "I would rate the firm's ability, including its knowledge of intellectual property, at the very top of the legal profession in the US - indeed unparalleled," he added. A peer praised the group's technical expertise: "It seems to have a very good grasp of the technical issues involved, is very detail oriented, and has a good appreciation of the legal issues, as well as spotting potential issues for arguments."

IP group chair David Pritikin has long been hailed as the firm's leading patent specialist, and clients recommended Edward Poplawski and Bryan Anderson, of the California offices, for their intelligence and trial acumen. Said a client: "They are incredibly bright, knowledgeable, talented and articulate - and they produce phenomenal results."
