Mexico

The flourishing IP department of general service law firm Gonzalez Calvillo SC Abogados breaks into the rankings this year following recommendations from peers. Competitors said that the firm's corporate practice has taken it into trade marks and, as the fourth largest law firm in Mexico, its size has given it an advantage in prosecution.

Gonzalez Calvillo was founded in 1982 and has 85 lawyers and 13 partners. The IP group is led by partner Pablo Hooper and has been "growing so much in the last few years" according to one competitor. Hooper was described by peers as "a great attorney regarding trade mark issues" and a "very nice guy and a very good lawyer." A third rival said: "I think he's a serious lawyer."

Hooper and his team of seven attorneys have attracted clients including Grupo Bimbo, Telefonica, Google, Kumon and Lowes. The department has particular experience in IP law relating to the entertainment industry and is developing its practice in the internet copyright field.
