Though a relatively young firm, Torres Septién y Asociados has been included in the new copyright category this year following favourable market feedback. The firm concentrates in copyright, IP litigation and anti-counterfeiting law. It serves companies including Universal Music, Nexxus, Toyota and Armstrong Laboratorios.
Partner Enrique Torres-Septién started the practice three years ago after leaving Barrera Siqueiros y Torres Landa, where he had worked for more than 30 years. He is one of 38 copyright arbitrators authorised by the Mexican Copyright Office. "Enrique is an outstanding IP lawyer," said one competitor. Another rival said: "I think as an individual he's probably the best. He's a good negotiator and understands litigation."
The firm is one of very few to have recovered damages for clients through the criminal courts in anti-counterfeiting cases. Damages are ordinarily agreed through out-of-court negotiations in Mexico.
