Hangzhou-based Capital Equity Legal Group has a strong reputation in contentious work, particularly in trade mark disputes. In an appeal case, The Superior People's Court of Zhejiang province accepted the firm's arguments that the disputed mark Zoke was a trade name rather than a trade mark and massively reduced the damages ordered by first instance court against its client. Partner Kong Xiayu Kong led the team assisting Guangdong Zoko Culture Development in the litigation, which was named as one of the notable cases of the provincial court. The decision enabled the firm to settle two similar disputes through negotiation.
Intellectual property accounts for one-third of the work at the firm, which operates out of five offices across the province. Founded in 1997, it is one of biggest firms in the region with 180 members. It serves a number of industry leaders typically from Zhejiang province, such as Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group Company, Cixi Gongniu Electrical Appliances and Zhejiang Province Branch of China Construction Bank.
