Mewburn Ellis is a prosecution practice active in both patents and trade marks, though predominantly in the former. It has four offices, in London, Bristol, Cambridge and Manchester, with 59 professionals. Clients include AstraZeneca, Arena Pharmaceutical and Young & Co's Brewery.

Another big client is Smart Technologies, and in a landmark case regarding the case law of slogan marks, Kerry Moroney has been working on trade mark appeals at the Court of Justice of the EU and the General Court since August 2012. On the patent side, Adrian Brasnett and Emily Hayes have been representing Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in an opposition at the EPO regarding a patent owned by Pfizer, while Nick Sutcliffe has also appeared in appeal proceedings on behalf of Esoterix, defending a DNA diagnostics patent.

The firm also grew this year, hiring four new associates including Jonathan Stafford from Carpmaels in October 2012.
