Stock Industrial Property Services is a leading name in the IP market and one of Turkey's oldest firms, with over 120 years in the business of protecting IP rights. Based in Istanbul, it is formed of trade mark and patent agents, European patent agents and lawyers. As well as representing a range of US clients including McDonald's, the firm has been active in advising Procter & Gamble, Philip Morris and Bristol-Myers Squibb. In April 2010 the firm represented Formula One Licensing in relation to 12 invalidation actions. Four cases remain pending. With Formula One races running in Turkey since 2005, it has been crucial for the client to avoid any registry of identical or similar trade marks in connection with major sports events. In other work, the firm advised Procter & Gable in connection with a motion mark application. Each motion mark consists of a series of images, each clearly showing what the motion is. The firm prepared specifications for each image describing each movement separately. Five motion mark applications were filed in 2010, with one having passed the examination for absolute grounds and being published for opposition at the time of writing. The case highlights the efforts of the Turkish Trademark Office to adopt global practices in IP law and demonstrates that unconventional trade marks can also be registered in Turkey.
