Editorial coverage

Peru

Established in 1928, Valencia Law Office has a long history as one of Peru's most respected IP boutiques. The firm's list of clients includes Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mastercard, Red Bull, Sony, Ferrer, General Electric and Toyota. One competitor said: "Valencia is a very traditional firm which is an important practice for both trade marks and patents." Peers noted that the firm has a very strong technical background; one third of its professionals are engineers.

Manager Alfredo Valencia, an engineer, was singled out for praise by clients. One patron said: "He's very conscientious and has a very good follow-up system so that no deadlines are missed. The advice that he gives is so on-target for us. His response to any enquiry is immediate." Valencia is also treasurer of the Peruvian Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and treasurer of the Asociación Peruana de Propiedad Industrial y de Derecho de Autor-Industrial Property and Copyright Peruvian Association (APPI).

Valencia recently represented Johnson & Johnson in opposing an application to register the trade mark Sufenta-Hameln, which was filed by Exmex Pharma. The firm argued that Sufenta is a well-known mark of Johnson & Johnson outside Peru and the Andean Pact Region. The trade mark office declared the opposition as unfounded in the first instance, but in 2010 the tribunal of the trade mark office accepted it on appeal.
