With over 65 years of experience, Francisco Espinosa Bellido Abogados is a thriving mid-sized IP boutique with particular expertise in trade marks. Clients of this family firm, which is now being run by its third generation of lawyers, include Grupo Bimbo, Bayer Schering Pharma, AstraZeneca, Abbott Laboratories and Sodimac. One competitor noted: "It is a quality firm and has better prices than some of the other firms."
Partner Monica Pejoves, who had been with the firm since 1993 and was head of the patent department, recently left to work in another area of practice. Pejoves will be replaced by Catalina Martinez. However, the change in personnel does not appear to have negatively affected the business. A partner from a rival firm said: "We think that Francisco Espinosa is growing with respect to patents."
The firm recently achieved a difficult victory for Nautica Apparel after filing a nullity action for the trade mark Manfin Nautica and design in the name of Alejandro Ramos Terán. The first instance was issued in July 2010 by the Peruvian trade mark commission and the case is under appeal. The outcome was notable because it is not easy to achieve based on a third party's prior registered trade mark, since this requires the commission to recognise it made a mistake by granting the second registration.
