Editorial coverage

Israel

Luthi & Co is uniformly recognised as one of Israel's leading patent contentious firms, if not the leading firm. The firm is "client focused and responsive to client needs and outcomes" says one client, while another says managing partner Richard Luthi "is pugnacious, you know he will fight to the end for your cause". The firm's number two, Daniel Lerner, also has an outstanding reputation in the market. 2010 saw Luthi, Christopher Brice, Sarit Erez and Martin Binnes acted in the largest patent case heard in Israel so far. The team represented MerckSerono in a dispute against the Israel Bio Engineering Project for Serono's Rebif multiple-sclerosis treatment drug. The court appointed the Nobel Prize laureate Aaron Ciechanover as scientific adviser, who helped the firm win two favourable opinions. The case is continuing. In a second case, Luthi, Brice, Lerner, Binnes and Hadas Glassman advised GlaxoSmithKline in several patent cases relating GSK's diabetes drug Avandia. In copyright, Luthi and Chamutal Niran successfully advised Hasbro in appeal proceedings concerning copyright infringement relating to Hasbro's Guess Who game before the Supreme Court. According to one client: "We were not only thoroughly prepared for the hearing but the other side had no real response to our submission. Luthi & Co had done an outstanding job in uncovering the facts and putting together the strongest possible legal position."
