United Kingdom

Murgitroyd & Company is an international patent and trade mark prosecution firm with eight UK offices, in Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, London City, Newcastle and York, with 37 attorneys. The practice can count among its trade mark clients names such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and Queen's University Belfast, with patent clients including Deep Tek, British Polythene Industries and Encap Drug Delivery.

A highlight piece of work for Murgitroyd actually featured the latter, as Craig Thomson represented it in successful opposition proceedings in October 2012, as well as prosecuting vital patents for the company.

In terms of recruitment, the firm made an interesting move this year, hiring Gareth Scaddan to a director position for patents from D Young & Co.

Scotland

International firm Murgitroyd & Company has its world headquarters in Glasgow, and two other Scottish outposts in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. It has 22 attorneys handling both patent and trade mark work for JM Huber and Encap Drug Delivery.

In an interesting move, the firm has this year accommodated GlaxoSmithKline's need for in-house cover by providing its own professionals, sending Marina Mauro to work with the company.

A standout piece of work however was Glasgow partner Niall Hendry's advising of Spidatrap.com, as it brought to an end a drawn out PCT application before the USPTO that should lead to the patent finally being granted for the product.
