Borenius & Co has been one of the most successful groups in recent years thanks to its proactive approach to market trends and development of value-added services. It has a strategy named "IPR 360° services", where on top of core patent and trade mark prosecution it provides advice on IP strategy, commercialisation, licensing, management consulting, training and analysis of markets and competitors. The firm also has a "Business runs on IP" training scheme for companies. It has an especially strong profile in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemistry-related work, where it represents almost all the generic companies, and in the past four years it claims to have grown its filing numbers by 400%. "The firm is doing very, very good work and patent office statistics show the number of filings from Borenius going up over the last three or four years," says a competitor. The past year saw partner Pia Hjelt advise Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals in patent litigation over the substance atorvastatin on invalidation, infringement, declaratory actions and damages claims. Partner Karri Leskinen also advised Actavis Group on patent litigation concerning the transdermal patch for administering fentayl. Both cases are running in various jurisdictions. In a third case, Hexal and Sandoz sought the advice of Leskinen on patent litigation related to omeprazole. The firm recently promoted biotechnology expert Dr Jaana Hämäläinen to partner level and partner Jonna Sahlin was elected chairperson of the Association of Finnish Patent Attorneys. One client who uses the firm for chemistry related matters recommends Leskinen and Hämäläinen for their technical experience in areas including polymer chemistry and inorganic chemistry.
