Czech Republic

Cermák Horejs Matejka a spol is the undisputed leading law firm in the jurisdiction, having been ranked in the top Tier across all categories. One client refers to the outfit as "outstanding". Another says: "We have a very good experience of the firm, who really are excellent in IP."

Competitors agree, saying that it is the most recognised IP firm in the country. One partner comments: "It deserves to be where it is. No one can argue with the rankings."

The firm continued to receive a large volume of work in 2010 and subsequently made Ondrej Cerych, Lukas Lorenc and Andrea Povazanova into partners in 2010 to cope with the extra work.

Lonrec, with managing partner Karel Cermak, has advised Budejovicky Budvar (Budweiser Budvar in English) in its long-running Community trade mark dispute with US brand Budweiser, owned by Anheuser-Busch, in various countries across Europe. Budwar won at the Court of Justice of the EU in July 2010 in a case against Anheuser-Busch, which was attempting to register a CTM for Budweiser. OHIM had ruled against the application in 2008, saying that Budvar already held the rights in Germany and Austria. The Court of Justice upheld that finding.

In a notable patent case last year, Cermák Horejs Matejka advised Philip Morris on the packaging of cigarettes that involved constitutional, international and EU legislation.
