Porzio Rios & Asociados is a traditional firm with a strong international client base. Formerly an IP boutique, it became the intellectual property division of corporate law firm Prieto y Cía following a 2007 merger. As a result of the merger, the company now has around 50 lawyers in all areas of practice, including seven IP attorneys and a litigation team of four additional lawyers.
One competitor described practitioners at Porzio as "very strong, very professional and very nice people". Another said: "They have a very good practice. They are very professional in terms of the quality of the work that they prepare and in terms of strategy." Senior partner Marino Porzio has worked at the World Intellectual Property Organization for almost two decades, serving as Deputy Director General for the last eight years of his tenure, and is frequently consulted in connection with drafting IP legislation.
Porzio's recent successes include obtaining 13 patents last year for Sony, despite the scarcity of patent work in Chile due to the country's accession to the PCT. Acting on behalf of Amazon.com, the firm prevented third-party registration of the domain name amazonkindle.cl in an arbitration case. It also successfully opposed registration of the trade mark Dali on behalf of the Spanish Fundación Gala-Salvador Dalí after a third party tried to register the famous painter's name. Other clients include Intel, Pfizer, Italian confectionary giant Ferrero, mining company BHP Billiton and power management business Eaton Corporation.
