Johansson & Langlois

World IP Survey Coverage: Print-friendly version

Editorial coverage

Chile

Founded in 1945, IP boutique Johansson & Langlois was described by rivals as a small but "well-respected and serious firm", especially in patent prosecution, where its practice benefits from the expertise of seven in-house engineers. "In patent matters, Johansson has been doing well lately," said one competitor. "It has a good team and it works very efficiently."

In recent years, Johansson has also been growing its anti-counterfeiting practice and was responsible for the confiscation of over 16,000 forged products in 2010 alone. Attorneys Christopher Doxrud and Fernando Echeverría represented brands such as Chanel, Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabbana against local shops which were selling forged jewellery in one of the most prestigious commercial centres in Chile. The matter attracted widespread media attention and resulted in the confiscation of the products. During the 2010 South Africa World Cup, the firm also managed one of the biggest confiscations ever made of forged National Football Team T-shirts associated with the trade mark Brooks.

Practitioners at Johansson were characterised by peers as demonstrating high ethical standards. A partner from a rival firm remarked: "They are good people both in a personal and professional context." Partners Felipe Langlois and Andres Echeverría helped create modifications to Chile's IP law, which have been in effect since December 2005, and Langlois has been a board member of the Asociación Chilena de la Propiedad Intelectual (ACHIPI) since 2002.
