While relatively new to Argentina's IP market, De Las Carreras & Chaloupka has made a name for itself as a strong competitor. Formed in 1962 as the IP practice of Allende & Brea, it maintained an association with that firm until the two began operating independently in 2002.
Peers identified the practice as being particularly strong in patent contentious work, with partner Pedro Chaloupka recognised as "a conscientious attorney and a good litigator" with excellent knowledge of the pharmaceutical sector. "When I have to face him, I know that he means business," said one rival. "He gets straight to the point. He's someone I would trust." In order to prevent conflicts of interest, particularly in the trade mark practice, the firm maintains a network of international contacts which also help it provide clients with IP services in other countries.
Attorneys at De Las Carreras are known for keeping up to date with developments in technology and legislation; the firm won one of the first cases of domain name disputes before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the first-ever preliminary injunction in patent infringement. It was also the first firm to attain an exclusive marketing act under article 70.9 of the TRIPS agreement.
