Calderón & De La Sierra has a reputation as a "very serious" competitor in patents and trade marks. The firm, which has seven attorneys and two engineers, has particular acumen in pharmaceutical and trade mark infringement cases and is developing its practice in the plant varieties field. Peers also noted that it is a "big player" in copyright, boosting it to the second Tier in this year's new category.
Since 1982, Calderón has been serving big names such as Starbucks, Pfizer, Fox, Cadbury and AstraZeneca. Clients were particularly impressed with the one-on-one attention they receive – the firm has a policy of making all the work done for a particular client the responsibility of one attorney, who involves other specialists for advice on specific issues. "I like the fact that they assign a dedicated partner," said one long-term patron. "He always responds and addresses anything of particular significance and difficulty. We feel we receive very personal care." Founding partner Carlos de la Sierra was a big hit with both patrons and competitors. "He really is very dedicated and responsive to our requests," said one client. The firm has been elected as lead counsel in Mexico for the Business Software Alliance (BSA) for the past 11 years.
