Taking one of the top spots in the new copyright category, Olivares & Cia is the only firm to be ranked in Tier one across all disciplines this year. The practice was founded as an IP boutique in 1969, but also offers services in corporate and business law.

"They are experienced, they are knowledgeable and from what I see they don't really lose a lot of clients," said one competitor. "I guess clients stay with them because they provide good service." The firm represents major companies such as Telmex, General Electric, Eli Lilly, Unilever and Warner Bros. One client said: "We work a lot with Olivares and it is very good."

Partner Luis Schmidt, who leads the copyright department, earned respect from all quarters. "He's a serious guy for copyright and I think it's also a very good firm," said one competitor. The firm recently scored a victory for the Chinese company Li-Ning, which makes athletic wear, against the Mexican trade mark office (IMPI). The company secured protection for its trade mark in Mexico in October 2010 after appealing earlier rejections issued by IMPI.
