While most IP practices are founded by lawyers who often employ in-house engineers, Becerril Coca & Becerril has taken a different approach. Technical experts at this family firm, which was established in 1953, outnumber attorneys at a ratio of more than three to two. Peers felt that the unusual composition of Becerril gives it a novel perspective on IP matters and a distinct advantage in patents, particularly in prosecution. "It's a law firm created by patent engineers, so I think they have a very good technical vision of patents," said one rival.
The firm focuses on IP, but offers services in complementary areas, such as corporate affairs. It counts well-known brands such as Burberry, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson and Schering-Plough amongst its clients. "I think Becerril is a good firm," said one rival. "I know its work. We have had litigation against the firm and I think it works well." At present, the firm is training customs officials and IMPI authorities in anti-counterfeiting measures, to help them recognise characteristics that distinguish real products from counterfeits goods. Brands including Burberry, Armani, American Eagle Outfitters and Bridgestone are involved in the project.
