Following the opening of its own trade mark agency in Beijing two years ago, JSM continues to make impressive leaps into the China IP market, where it handles prosecution work, including applications, oppositions, reviews and searches. The IP and IT group is led by Kenny Wong from the Hong Kong office and he is supported by partner Rosita Li. Some of its important clients include Ann Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch and flashlight manufacturer Mag Instruments.
The JSM team has been busy with helping Seven Towns, a toy and game designer, to protect the IP rights of its famous Rubik's Cube. Since the patent for the toy has expired, the firm has to find other ways to protect and enforce its IP rights, such as using trade mark, three-dimensional mark and copyright. It successfully convinced Alibaba to take down listings of three-dimensional cube puzzles that resemble Rubik's Cube. This has proven to be an effective way of tackling infringements as Alibaba is one of China's most popular promotion and trading platforms.
