Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker continues to raise its IP profile, steadily rising in the patent contentious rankings and making its debut in biotechnology/life sciences. "It has a good, solid pharmaceutical practice, good depth of experience and a pretty deep bench," said a client.

Anchored by former Fitzpatrick Cella Harper & Scinto litigators Bruce Wexler and Joseph O'Malley, the group further strengthened its life sciences and pharmaceutical patent litigation practices late last year with the addition of a number of former Kirkland & Ellis partners. Gerald Flattmann, Melanie Rupert and Christine Willgoos brought with them biotech and Hatch-Waxman Act litigation experience, as well as clients Sanofi-Aventis, Galderma and Forest Laboratories.

O'Malley, global co-chair of the IP practice, is highly regarded by legal commentators as a formidable presence in IP. "He's quite experienced," said a client. "He doesn't promise you the world and just say things you want to hear. He's pretty aggressive but also realistic, and he likes to win. He wants to win. He's not just doing it to work the case."
