Saint Island International Patent & Law Offices remains at the forefront of the market and clients speak highly of its prosecution practice: "The firm is known for being prompt and correct in handling the work entrusted and we believe this comes from its own excellent maintenance and electronic data processing systems," says one. Its high-quality service has attracted an enviable roster of clients that includes Intel, Dell, Pfizer and Wyeth.
On the contentious side, the firm handled a number of infringement cases last year. Managing partner Frank Liu and junior partner Tony Tung-Yang Chang worked together on a patent infringement case defending LG Electronics. The plaintiff filed a parallel lawsuit and sued other related companies at a US district court at almost the same time, adding significance and difficulty to the case in Taiwan as the pace was faster than in the US case. The parties reached a settlement last February.
Underwriters Laboratories, a product safety testing and certification organisation, wanted to stop the previous holder of a logo from continuing to use it after the latter sold its shares. While Underwriters Laboratories could take the matter to court, Saint Island advised it to settle the matter successfully through negotiation to save the client time and money.
