Santamarina y Steta is a full-service law firm with an IP group known for its technical expertise. The firm can trace its origins back to 1947, when it was formed under the name of Baker Botts Andrews & Miranda and specialised in mining, oil and labour law. By the 1950s it had evolved into a corporate law firm with an IP department. It now has offices in Mexico City, Monterrey and Tijuana. The IP team counts industry leaders like Kimberly-Clark, General Motors and Colgate-Palmolive amongst its clients.
Adviser José Miranda was singled out for praise by peers. One competitor said: "He has an outstanding clientele who will never walk away from Santamarina until the day he leaves." In May 2010, the firm began a three-month anti-counterfeiting project with the International Federation of Spirit Producers (IFSP), which represents the producers of top alcoholic beverages. The assignment involved coordinating operations and raids in Mexico for brands including Tequila Cuervo, Bacardi and Martell.
