Last year saw Justisiari Kusumah lead the team at Soemadipradja & Taher to new heights, but Kusumah himself has additional cause for celebration, having recently been appointed as the head of the Indonesian Intellectual Property Consultants Association. The firm's greatest asset lies in its expertise in enforcement actions for international manufacturers against local counterfeiters. "They have provided excellent assistance on one significant matter where additional information was required from investigators," says a US client. "They acted as project managers for this matter and assembled all the information required for me to advise my business properly regarding timing, costs and likely outcomes." Key client Philip Morris often demands Kusumah's services for its trade mark portfolio, both for prosecution and enforcement work, as do Nestlé and Epson, among others. With counterfeit products plaguing the Indonesian markets, Toyota Motor also uses this firm to combat counterfeiters of car spare parts. However, the team's Unilever and Procter & Gamble portfolios are the principal focus. Kusumah advises on the entire patent and design portfolios for Unilever and trade mark portfolio for Procter & Gamble to protect its IP from trade mark trolls operating under Indonesia's first come, first served registration process. "It truly understands the issues faced by a US multinational in Indonesia and is active in ensuring compliance," concludes one client.
