Linklaters' IP team in Belgium is headed up by counsel Pieter Van Den Broecke. Broecke recently advised Belgium Post services De Poste on a complete rebranding in the context of the liberalisation of postal services, Dexia Bank in protecting its key brands and Phillip Morris on anti-counterfeit matters. With merged IP and TMT practices, Linklaters is especially strong on multi-disciplinary cases and works often in conjunction with its tax and competition departments. It recently helped Johnson & Johnson apply the patent income deduction scheme, which resulted in the company expanding its Belgium business. In patents, Broecke worked in coordination with global partners to represent Tate & Lyle on patent infringement proceedings launched against the purchaser of its business, to which Tate & Lyle had given certain guarantees. The firm has invested less in IP globally than in other practice areas over the past decade, though it recently hired associate Tom de Coster.
